Writing About the Body: Wellness, Illness, Recovery

Infertility. Cancer. Depression.Healing. Death. Our bodies—ailing, aging, evolving—offer rich opportunities for personal essays and memoirs. This class is designed for patients, family members, caregivers, and providers—anyone who has been affected by health issues and wants to write his or her story. We’ll explore real-life moments that can serve as starting points for story scenes and other creative opportunities.

As inspiration, we’ll review fiction, nonfiction, and poetry that address the body and health. But we’ll spend the most time on exercises and free writing to generate fresh material from our own experiences. Participants will also learn a process to help them explore writing about the body and health after they complete the course.

You’ll leave this class with several story “starts” and many more ideas to continue your writing discoveries.
