Field Middle School Students Named 'Yes I Can' Award Recipients

NORTHBROOK, IL — The Illinois Council for Exceptional Children’s has selected Field Middle School students Alfonso Hernandez, Jr. and Christian Martinez for the "Yes I Can" award. The award honors and celebrates the achievements of youth with exceptionalities to encourage individuals to seek their highest potential and to increase public awareness of the abilities, aspirations, and personal qualities of those with disabilities, according to a news release.

The "Yes I Can" award consists of six categories: Academics, Arts, School and Community Activities, Self-Advocacy, Technology, and Transition. Hernandez, who was nominated by his teacher Alexis Ellis, has been selected for his academic achievement. Martinez, who was nominated by his teacher Alexis Kai Vogelsburg, has been selected for his achievement in mastering activities that lead to successful experiences in work, vocational training, or independent living.

Both students will be recognized at a virtual conference on Nov. 6, according to the newsletter.
