Hotel Guests Skip Out On Bill; Shoplifters Steal Purses: Blotter

Incidents and arrests from the Northbrook Police Department blotter from Jan. 11 to Jan. 17.

NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department as a record of incidents reported to the police and those arrested on criminal charges, which represent accusations that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless found guilty in court beyond a reasonable doubt.

INCIDENTS

FRAUD
Staff at the Renaissance Hotel, 933 Skokie Blvd., reported around 10 a.m. on Jan. 11 that two guests at the hotel had left without paying their balance after being informed the credit card they provided had been declined.

IDENTITY THEFT

  • A Pebble Beach Road resident reported around 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 12 that they discovered several unauthorized charges on their account statement.
  • A Phyllis Drive resident reported on the afternoon of Jan. 13 that they had been informed someone had used their identity to make an unauthorized credit inquiry.
  • An Antique Lane resident reported around 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 16 that they had been notified of an unauthorized charge on an unspecified account.
  • A resident at the Best Buy, 1072 Willow Road, reported that someone had used their information to open a credit card account and make a purchase.

THEFT
Police were told around 6 p.m. on Jan. 11 that several people had reported someone stole purses or wallets from the back stock room of the Northbrook Court Sur La Table.

RETAIL THEFT
Staff at the Northbrook Court Lord and Taylor reported around 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 16 that two unidentified male shoplifters had stolen several purses from the store.

CAR BURGLARY
Someone smashed a window of a car parked in the lot of the Five Seasons Family Sports Club, 1300 Techny Road, stealing a laptop computer that had been in the floor area.

HOME BURGLARY
A resident of the 2300 block of El Cid Lane reported that someone burglarized their home at some point between Jan. 7 and Jan. 17, stealing various items from inside, damaging the front door and leaving it partially open.

ARRESTS

Martin Contreras, 55, of the first block of Devonshire Circle, Elgin, was arrested around 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 11 and charged with driving under the influence following a traffic stop in the area of Dundee and Pfingsten roads. He was also issued citations for improper lane usage and illegal transportation of alcohol.

A 24-year-old Skokie woman was arrested around 10 p.m. on Jan. 11 and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop in the area of Shermer and Pfingsten roads. She was also issued citations for failure to signal and illegal transportation of alcohol.

A 40-year-old Wheeling man was arrested around 2:30 a.m. on Jan. 12 and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop in the area of Walters Avenue and Landwehr Road. He was also issued citations for a lack of a rear license plate light and proper taillight.

A 31-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 2:15 a.m. on Jan. 14 and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop in the 700 block of Skokie Boulevard. He was also issued a citation for disobeying a traffic control device and taken into custody on an outstanding warrant related to forfeiting bond in connection with a charge speeding and driving with a suspended license.

A 33-year-old Northbrook man was arrested around 11 a.m. on Jan. 17 and charged with driving with a suspended license and expired registration following a traffic stop in the 500 block of Dundee Road. He was also issued a citation for failure to notify the secretary of state of an address change.
