Man Raises Machete At Driver After Cutting Them Off: Police

The Glenview resident was charged with assault after exiting his Lexus and running toward the driver he had cut off earlier, police said.

NORTHBROOK, IL — A Glenview man is accused of assaulting another driver following a traffic dispute on Feb. 14. James J. Lynch, of the 1700 block of Henley Street, Glenview, was charged in connection with the incident and is due back in court on March 25.

A person told police at 8:16 p.m. at Dundee Road and Skokie Boulevard, Lynch, driving a silver Lexus, cut him off while they were driving southbound near the 100 block of Skokie Boulevard. The Lexus continued to drive very close to his vehicle before driving in front when the complainant flashed his high beams at the car.

Shortly after, according to police, Lynch waved a machete out of the driver's side window. The Lexus stopped in the 700 block of Skokie and Lynch exited his vehicle and began charging toward the complainant’s vehicle with the machete raised. The complainant drove away and called 911.

Police later located Lynch's vehicle in the Curaleaf lot. He told officers he brandished a box cutter to scare the complainant. Officers located a machete near the driver’s seat of the defendant’s vehicle.

Lynch was taken into custody and transported to the police department. He said he only wanted to scare the complainant and never intended to cause him harm. The machete was confiscated. Lynch was released after posting bond.
