New 6-Lane Pool Coming to Northbrook Sports Center

Design concept approved by Park District Commissioners.

Plans to renovate the Northbrook Sports Center Pool have received a green light from the Park District Board of Commissioners.

The project includes a 25-yard pool with six lanes, a leisure pool, a vortex pool, zero-depth entry, a climbing wall, and, a diving pool with a drop slide and two diving boards.

The Board cited aging infrastructure at the current pool and the growing popularity of recreational swimming in the community as reason to take up the project, according to a Park District news release. The new facility will provide recreational elements for all ages and greater programming flexibility, while maximizing service to the entire community.

“The tank at the popular community pool is almost 50 years old and needs to be replaced, along with the mechanical systems, underground piping and concrete deck,” according to the release. “Before planning the project, the District conducted extensive research. This included analyzing program data from the past several years, reviewing trends and cost recovery data, obtaining community feedback, and utilizing information about regional and national recreation trends.”

The concept will now be submitted to the Illinois Department of Public Health. Plans are to open the new pool by 2017.
