Northbrook Crime: Scammer Claims Grandson Jailed, Wanted Wheeling Man With Warrant Makes Wrong Turn, Cops Say

Northbrook police reports: March 17-March 24

NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department as a record of police activities. An arrest is not an indication of guilt and criminal charges, which can be dropped or reduced, are merely accusations. All defendants are innocent until their guilt is established by a court.

FRAUD

A man told police he received a telephone call on March 13 from a man who told him his grandson was being detained and needed $4000 to be released from jail. The caller instructed the victim to purchase two "green dot" cards for $2000 each and to wait for a call back for instructions. Later he provided the caller the access numbers for each of the cards. The victim did as instructed but later realized it was a scam.
