Northbrook July 4 Festivities Begin With Liberty Loop & Lap

The annual Independence Day race at Techny Prairie Park and Fields includes a 5K run/walk and a 1-mile fun run for children.

NORTHBROOK, IL — The Village's Independence Day festivities will begin with a longtime community running tradition at Techny Prairie Park and Fields.

The Northbrook Park District’s Liberty Loop & Lap, now in its 18th year, is scheduled for Saturday, July 4, at Techny Prairie Park and Fields, 1750 Techny Road.

The family-friendly event is open to runners and walkers of all ages and experience levels. It includes the Liberty Loop 5K Run/Walk at 7:30 a.m., followed by the 1-mile Liberty Lap Fun Run for children ages 4 to 11 at 8:30 a.m.

“The Liberty Loop & Lap has become a beloved Fourth of July tradition, bringing our community together in a celebration of fitness, patriotism and hometown pride,” Northbrook Park District Superintendent of Athletics and Fitness Meri Shea said in a statement. “We are honored to be part of so many families' Independence Day traditions and enjoy seeing generations of participants return year after year. We look forward to welcoming runners, walkers and families of all ages as we kick off a memorable day of celebration together.”

The top runners in each age category will receive medals, and the top overall male and female finishers will receive plaques.

Online registration is available at nbparks.org/event/libertylooplap until 5 p.m. Thursday, July 2. On-site registration will be available from 6:15 a.m. to 7:15 a.m. on race day.

This year’s Liberty Loop & Lap is made possible by presenting sponsor Northbrook Bank and Trust; gold-level sponsors J. Blanton Plumbing, Commonwealth Running, Floor Coverings International and Jeremy Lew & Associates; and sponsor How About Learning.

Liberty Loop & Lap Schedule

The Liberty Loop 5K Run/Walk begins at 7:30 a.m. on a certified 5K course starting at Techny Prairie Park and Fields and looping through Meadowhill Park. Winners will receive medals, and pre-registered participants will receive a dry-fit T-shirt and gift bag.

The Liberty Lap Fun Run begins at 8:30 a.m. The 1-mile modified Liberty Loop course is designed for junior joggers and starts and finishes at Techny Prairie Park and Fields, at the same location as the 5K. The route winds along the park’s Trail Through Time. Young runners will receive a T-shirt, gift bag and miniature U.S. flag at the finish line.

More Northbrook Fourth Of July Events

Northbrook’s Fourth of July festivities will continue later in the day with a parade, entertainment and fireworks.

The Fourth of July parade begins at 4 p.m. just west of Westmoor School, 2500 Cherry Lane, and ends at Village Hall, 1225 Cedar Lane.

Entertainment begins at 7 p.m. at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome at Meadowhill Park, 1479 Maple Avenue. The evening will include a DJ, Kona Ice truck and family activities led by the Rotary Club of Northbrook.

Fireworks are scheduled for dusk and can be viewed from Meadowhill Park, 1479 Maple Avenue, and Techny Prairie Park and Fields, 1750 Techny Road.
