Northbrook Names New Fire Chief

Deputy Chief Andrew Carlson, an 18-year veteran of Northbrook FD, will replace retiring Chief Jose Torres on Jan. 1.

NORTHBROOK, IL — The Northbrook Fire Department is promoting one of their own to its top post. After 35 years in firefighting and 18 with Northbrook, Deputy Chief Andrew Carlson will take over for Chief Jose Torres starting on Jan. 1, the village announced Wednesday.

“Andy Carlson has excellent management experience. He is a skilled fire professional who is well versed in the Northbrook community," Village Manager Rich Nahrstadt said.

Carlson has worked his way up the ladder with the department since he started as a firefighter and paramedic in 1999. He has served in various positions as lieutenant, captain, battalion chief and, most recently, deputy chief.

"Andy is a respected leader who will continue to provide exemplary public service in his new role as Chief of the Northbrook Fire Department,” Nahrstadt said, announcing the hire.

Carlson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Ceramic Engineering and a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois and a Bachelor of Science degree in Fire Science Management from Southern Illinois University, according to the announcement. He also has various certifications, including Emergency Rescue Technician, Tactics and Strategy, Fire Officer, Instructor, Hazardous Materials Operations and Incident Command, and Provisional Chief Fire Officer.

Northbrook Fire Department Chief Jose Torres announced in September he was stepping down at the end of the year.

Carlson's ceremonial swearing-in ceremony has been scheduled for the Jan. 9 regular meeting of the Northbrook Board of Trustees.
