Janet Weiss Lerner, PhD, died peacefully at home with her family on May 25 at the age of 88. She was an active educator for six decades, and a pioneer in the field of learning disabilities. She first published her landmark textbook, “Learning Disabilities: Theories, Diagnosis, and Teaching Strategies,” in 1971. The 13th edition, Learning Disabilities and Related Mild Disabilites: Teaching Strategies and New Directions was published in 2015. She received numerous awards for her seminal work including the J. E. Wallace Wallin Special Education Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council for Exceptional Children in 2004. She is survived by her beloved husband Eugene Lerner; her children Susan Cohn (James Cohn), Laura Lerner, and Dean Lerner (Susan Lerner); her grandchildren Aaron Cohn, (Sarah Cohn), Lee Cohn, Anne Lerner and Sarah Lerner; and her great grandson Samuel Cohn. The service will be held at the Chicago Jewish Funerals, 8851 Skokie Blvd (at Niles Center Road), Skokie at 1PM on Wednesday, May 27. Interment Shalom.
