Northbrook Park District Begins Basin Loop Trail Renovation

NORTHBROOK, IL — Renovation of the Basin Loop Trail at Techny Prairie Park and Fields began Monday, launching a project expected to continue through October.

The Northbrook Park District project includes the complete removal and replacement of the asphalt path surrounding the basin, along with several entrances connecting to the trail.

"The Basin Loop Trail is popular among walkers, joggers and cyclists, and we are excited to embark on this project that will enhance this great community asset," Director of Parks and Properties James Kim said in a statement.

"We also know that this project will cause a temporary inconvenience to users, and we are grateful in advance for the community’s patience during construction."

Trail And Bridge Closed

The Basin Loop Trail will remain closed throughout the project, along with the bridge connecting it to the Meadowhill Park path.

Most other amenities at Techny Prairie Park and Fields are expected to remain open, including:

• Athletic fields
• Picnic shelters
• The warming shelter and restrooms
• The Trail Through Time
• The Skate Park
• Batting cages
• Anetsberger Golf Course

The Park District said signs will be posted if temporary closures of any additional amenities become necessary during construction.

$200,000 State Grant Helps Fund Work

The most recent major renovations at Techny Prairie Park and Fields were completed in 2006, while portions of the trail date to the late 1980s.

Park District officials said community feedback has identified the maintenance of existing assets, particularly trails, as a priority.

The renovation is being partially funded through a $200,000 Bicycle Path Grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
