A great way to renew a commitment to health and wellness is by becoming a member of the park district’s state-of-the-art Techny Prairie Activity Center. The facility offers more than 50 weekly group fitness classes, a fitness floor with cardio, strength and functional fitness equipment, an indoor walking track and a gymnasium with open times for pickleball, basketball and volleyball.
TPAC also offers a variety of specialty classes and programs, including new options for 2025:
Youth sports opportunities in winter and spring include basketball, volleyball, soccer, lacrosse, cycling, skateboarding and martial arts. The adult sports lineup features softball leagues, pick up soccer and basketball, as well as lessons and leagues for tennis and pickleball.
The Northbrook Sports Center, which features two year-round NHL-sized ice rinks, is the perfect place for children to develop and perfect their ice-skating skills.
Following the Learn to Skate USA program structure, the Sports Center offers classes in basic and free skate skills starting with “Snowplow Sam” for ages 3 and 4, all the way up to level 6 for advanced skaters up to age 17.
Figure skating group lessons are a fun and affordable way to learn ice skills. Sessions run from January 6 to February 8, February 10 to March 22, and May 20 to June 4.
“Learn to Speedskate” classes for children ages 5 and up run January 7 through April 2. The program is open to skaters who are at or above the Basic 4 level under the Learn to Skate USA curriculum.
The Sports Center also offers ice hockey classes in a fun and safe environment, starting with “Intro to Hockey” for skaters ages 4 to 12. There are also open hockey times for youth and adults.
The park district’s Leisure Center offers programs for all ages in dance and visual arts. The lineup includes everything from family ceramics workshops to painting, mixed media and the art of shibori.
The Leisure Center is also home to Sunshine Preschool for ages 3 to 5, a multifaceted program that teaches educational and social skills through music, art, crafts, cooking, story time, science, sports, theatre and field trips.
A Sunshine Preschool Open House will take place from 10am-11:30am on December 14 at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue in Northbrook. Registration for the 2025-26 school year opens on December 16.
While summer camp season might seem far away, don’t miss the chance to attend a Summer Camp Open House from 5:30pm-7pm on January 16 at Techny Prairie Activity Center.
Camps in sports, theater, dance, crafts, golf and more are offered. All are designed for children to learn new skills, develop an appreciation for teamwork and build self-confidence with weekly session options that encourage exploration and new activities. Save 10% by registering by February 17.
New this year is the “Counselor in Training” program for teens ages 14-15 who want to prepare for a future position as a camp counselor. Sessions take place in June and July and require an interview.
Adults and children interested in performing on stage can sign up for auditions in January for Northbrook Theatre Youth Company’s “Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” which will be staged in March, and in March for Northbrook Community Theatre’s “School of Rock,” with performances in May.
Starting in January, the park district offers theater classes for youth and seniors, including improv theater for both age groups.
To assist families and reduce barriers to access, the park district offers scholarships for some camps, programs and memberships, working with Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook to determine need. The scholarship program is funded in part by Northbrook Bank & Trust Company, NA, a Wintrust Community Bank. The park district also offers extended payment plans for some programs.
The park district also presents an array of special events throughout the year.
Next month, the community is invited to the park district’s Holiday Craft Fair on December 14, and the second annual Shine: A Chanukah Celebration, held in collaboration with Congregation Beth Shalom on December 15.
Special events planned for 2025 include the Light Up the Night Family Dance on February 7, Winter Scavenger-Ganza on February 17, Brunch with the Bunny on April 12 and Spring Tea on May 3. For more information, call (847) 291-2993 or visit nbparks.org/winterguide.
