“Diary of a Wimpy Kid” is a 21st century illustrated novel for young adults that has generated a series of additional books, movies and TV shows.

American author and cartoonist Jeff Kinney created the series and media franchise whose protagonist, middle schooler Greg Heffley, navigates the challenges of school with his group of quirky friends, and in the process reevaluates the true meaning of friendship.

“Diary of a Wimpy Kid (60-Minute Edition)” was recently released to the public for licensing, and the park district was excited to see there was a youth-accessible way to bring this story to life on stage, said Northbrook Park District Performing Arts Supervisor Melody DeRogatis.

“We are delighted to be one of the first theatre groups locally to bring this fan-favorite book to the stage and champion literacy,” DeRogatis said.

The 60-minute production tells a wonderful story for people of all ages, but will especially appeal to children in 3rd through 8th grade, making this an excellent outing for families with children, DeRogatis said.

Performances will take place at 7pm on March 11 through March 13, and at 10am, 1pm and 3:30pm on March 15. Tickets are $15. Group pricing is available for groups of 10 or more.

Northbrook Theatre Youth Company has presented “theatre by youth, for youth” for more than 40 years. Actors are ages 8 and up, and perform plays and musicals enjoyed by audiences of all ages. Summer camps are also offered for youth interested in performing on stage and learning more about theatre arts.
