NORTHBROOK, IL — A local attorney and school board member will be sworn in next month as one of the newest members of the Illinois bench.

Frank Andreou was named Thursday as one of 15 new associate judges in Cook County Circuit Court following a vote among the county's 252 circuit judges.

Andreou, 49, had been selected last month among 30 finalists out of 212 candidates following an interview process with a nominating committee including Chief Judge Tim Evans and 10 other presiding judges, according to a release.

In April, Andreou won reelection to the Northbrook School District 27 Board of Education through 2023. He said he was resigning his seat before being sworn in as a member of the judiciary on Jan. 6.

"I was proud to serve as a member of the Dist. 27 Board and am sad to have to leave," Andreou said. "However, when the opportunity for the judgeship came, I took it."

Andreou ran for election as a circuit judge in the 12th Subcircuit in the March 2016 Democratic primary, coming in third out of four candidates. He said he twice previously applied to become an associate judge.

Before moving to Northbrook, Andreou worked as an assistant state's attorney in Cook County for four years after graduating John Marshall Law School in 1995. He founded a Chicago-based firm with Luke Casson in 2002.

Andreou told Patch he was in the process of winding down his practice. He said he would also be stepping down from the Northbrook Economic Development Committee and as a member of the Northbrook Chamber of Commerce.
