According to the school, every spring Porcaro, who retired in 2021, taught her students the responsibility of taking care of their pet mealworms until they turned into beetles, and she did the same with butterflies. She gave her students sunflower seeds to grow, and she often received photos of children standing next to sunflowers that had grown to 3 to 6 foot by the end of the summer.
The classroom was built with contributions from the community in partnership with Green City Gardens following a fundraising drive last year. More than $16,000 was raised in the effort.
