Planned Burn at Techny Fields Sunday

NORTHBROOK, IL - A planned burn will take place at Techny Prairie Park and Fields on Sunday, March 20 starting at 10 a.m.

According to the Northbrook Park District, the purpose of the burn is to “improve the native plant community by reducing nonnative shrubs and weeds that invade the natural area and degrade the ecosystem.”

“Burning is a technique widely used for the restoration and management of wetlands, woodlands and prairies throughout the Midwest. The increased plant diversity that results from burning will enhance the area for use by wildlife (insects, mammals and birds).”

Tallgrass Restoration, LLC will perform the burn with the notification of the Northbrook Fire Department.

The burn will be conducted in a portion of the natural areas north of Techny Road and adjacent to the retention basin, next to the North Branch of the Chicago River.
