Spartan Roundup 12/12: Swim Teams Reunite

Both Glenbrook North basketball teams had to battle in overtime conference games.

BOYS BASKETBALL - split a pair of road games to open Central Suburban League North action. The Spartans took care of business on Tuesday , which GBN split the conference with last season, 67-39. Andrew McAuliffe scored a season-high 29 points and Mark Johnson set a new career-high with 28. Three days later Deerfield shocked the Spartans (6-1, 1-1) in overtime 48-42. Johnson had a team-high 19 points, but McAuliffe was out with an injury. Up next: Tuesday vs. Conant and Friday vs. Highland Park.

GIRLS BASKETBALL - The girls hoops team also split a pair of conference games. The Spartans dropped a 50-47 overtime decision to Niles North on Tuesday, but bounced back against Deerfield Thursday night in a 48-46 win, also in overtime. Guards Rachel Dress (16 points) and Rachel Blitt (17 points) led the Spartans (7-3, 2-1) in the win. Each of GBN's conference games have been decided by three points or less. Up next: Tuesday at Evanston and Friday at Highland Park.

BOYS SWIMMING - There's nothing like a rivalry to create a contested result. The Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South swim teams from 1972  Friday night. The Spartans won the reunion, but the Titans won the dual meet of current high schoolers 120-66. On Saturday GBN took fifth in the Spartan Sprint Classic. Brian Roytman (25 fly), Jason Chen (50 back) and Mike Kessler (25 breast) earned second place finishes. Up next: Friday at Evanston.

GIRLS GYMNASTICS - Carli Betman won the vault at the Spartan Classic on Saturday to head North's charge. The Spartans scored a 125.65 to take fourth in the 11-team field. Betman took seventh in the all-around and fellow freshman Tatum Zarawsky placed 15th. Up next: Tuesday at Maine West and Friday at Lyons Invite.

BOYS HOCKEY - The Spartans maintained an undefeated record in the Metro North. They topped Loyola Maroon 4-1 and tied Stevenson 3-3. At 13-0-2 in the league North (26-8-6) is pulling away from the pack with seven conference games remaining. Up next: Wednesday vs. Highland Park and Friday vs. Glenbrook South.
