Spartan Roundup April 18

Girls soccer, boys volleyball and the diamond sports all had undefeated weeks.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL - Glenbrook North picked up a on Friday. The 25-20, 25-16 win over area-ranked New Trier gives the Spartans another big win after previously beating Wheaton-Warrenville South and Glenbrook South. Scott Schwartz led the team with six kills and Kyle Bedford had 14 assists. GBN (11-3) beat Maine West 25-6, 25-17 earlier in the week in conference play. This week, the team plays at Wheeling Monday and hosts Highland Park Wednesday before competing in the Brother Rice Invite over the weekend.

GIRLS SOCCER - The Spartans opened up Central Suburban League North play with a 1-0 win over Highland Park on Saturday. Sophomore Montana Paley scored on a free kick for the game's only goal. The Giants expected to contend for the conference title, so this win bodes well for the Spartans, who tied Maine South 0-0 and beat Carmel 2-0 in out of conference games during the week. GBN (5-2-1, 1-0) hosts Niles West Monday and will co-host the Glenbrook Cup on Thursday and Saturday at .

BASEBALL - Alex Hermeling in a 2-1 CSL crossover win on Thursday. Hermeling, who is committed to pitch at Louisiana-Monroe next spring, went the full seven innings. Sean Thomas brought in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded. The Spartans are now 12-1 on the season after wins over Hoffman Estates (4-1) and Maine South (9-5). This week GBN has conference games at GBS and Deerfield during the week and a non-conference affair at Fremd on Saturday.

SOFTBALL - Niles North and Maine East were no match for the Spartans this week. GBN picked up blowout wins (16-0 over the Blue Demons and 12-2 over the Vikings) over both CSL North opponents to open conference play 2-0 and improve to 6-3-1 on the season. Jenny McTague got the win and Lindsay Synek had a big day at the plate against in the 5-inning game against Niles North. This week they host Lane Tech and Wheeling out of conference with big CSL North games against Highland Park and Deerfield.
