Spartan Roundup May 16

Baseball clinched conference and boys volleyball has nearly done the same.

BASEBALL - With a hot lineup and an ace pitcher in , the Spartans clinched the Central Suburban League North title. GBN beat Maine West twice (10-6 and 10-9) with Sean Thomas and Wade Thacker earning the wins. Hermeling came one strike away from a no-hitter in a 9-1 win against Waukegan Saturday. Catcher Jason Scholl hit a home run in the bottom of the first to spark a strong offensive performance from the Spartans (24-2, 13-1).

“I think our lineup is really working well right now," Scholl said. "We’re all getting on base and I think that’s a credit to everyone. Everyone one through nine is hitting the ball pretty solid. We all have our individual roles that we’re playing pretty well.”

This week the Spartans will close out conference play with a pair of games against Highland Park and travel to Mount Carmel and Libertyville for non-conference showdowns.

SOFTBALL - A 14-4 win over Deerfield on Tuesday set the stage for a showdown with Maine West for the conference title. The Spartans needed a win to tie the Warriors in the standings, but came up short in a 7-2 decision. GBN out-hit Maine West, but made a number of costly errors. Now the focus shifts towards the postseason, where the team is the No. 6 seed in the New Trier Sectional. Lindsay Synek and the rest of the Spartans have a chance for redemption. Maine West is in the Spartans' regional in two weeks.

BOYS GYMNASTICS - Nate Elfant took 21st in the all-around at state. He also competed in floor, taking 46th, pommel horse (21st), rings (30th), vault (27th), parallel bars (30th) and high bar (27th). Fellow sophomore Tony Santellano took 45th on floor.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL - It was a big week for the volleyball team, with wins against Highland Park and Niles North, the two closest contenders in conference. The Spartans beat HP 25-22, 25-13 on Tuesday and followed that up with a 25-23, 25-20 win over the Vikings on Thursday. Scott Schwartz took his turn to star with eight kills in the win over Niles North, but the . GBN (23-8, 7-1) has matches against Mundelein, Maine East and Deerfield this week.

GIRLS SOCCER - With a share of the CSL North title on the line, the Spartans couldn't get past Deerfield. meant GBN finished third in the conference after winning it last year. Starters Montana Paley, Maggie Doar and Stephanie Murthey are all out with injuries, a major blow heading into this week's regionals. The No. 3 seed Spartans host Mundelein, the team who knocked them out in triple overtime in last year's regional final, in Tuesday's semifinal.

GIRLS TRACK - No Spartans were able to qualify for state from the Loyola Sectional. , it was a tough task against top competition. Patricia Hare finished third in the high jump, falling two inches short of two automatic places to state.

BOYS TRACK - The Spartans settled for sixth at the CSL North outdoor meet in Highland Park Friday. They will try to have a better showing at the Niles West Sectional on Thursday.

GIRLS WATER POLO - Prospect ended the GBN season in the sectional quarterfinal with a 17-7 win. Margot Tuchler led the host Spartans (12-13) with four goals in the loss.

BOYS WATER POLO - Rival Glenbrook South took down the Spartans in the sectional quarterfinals in a 21-7 rout on Thursday. Brendan Schilling scored twice to GBN (12-17) while leading scorer Matt Bacinich was held scoreless.

GIRLS LACROSSE - The regular season is over for the girls after a 2-1 week. Blowout wins over Lane Tech, 20-5, and Northside Prep, 18-4, were followed by a 12-11 loss to Palatine. The Spartans begin the postseason with a sectional semi against Lake Forest on Thursday in Highland Park.

BOYS LACROSSE - GBN moved to 13-3 on the season with a pair of wins over west suburban schools. After topping Benet Academy 14-5 on Tuesday, the Spartans beat Naperville North 15-9 on Saturday. They will finish the regular season with a top ten matchup at Palatine this Thursday.

BOYS TENNIS - Brian Eirinberg won No. 3 singles at the CSL North tournament over the weekend while the team took third behind Deerfield and Highland Park. Brian Levitas, No. 1 singles, and Adam Spector, No. 2 singles, both took second place. Levitas and Spector will be among the Spartans trying to qualify for the state tournament at the Schaumburg Sectional this weekend.
