Spartan Roundup May 9

Nate Elfant qualified for state in two events in gymnastics and Val Bobart took a conference title in track.

BOYS LACROSSE - After beating Glenbrook South 11-8 and losing to Loyola 12-3, the Spartans finished the week with a bang in an Saturday afternoon. Ryan Maksimovic, Tommy Chapman and Ryan Merritt led a balanced attack that broke down Stevenson's zone defense for a Senior Day win that got the team back on track after the loss to Loyola, the team's worst of the season. Junior Matt Greenfield played well in goal, making 12 saves. GBN (11-3) will play Benet Academy on Tuesday.

GIRLS SOCCER - Niles North came to Northbrook for Senior Night on Tuesday and nearly came away with three points, but Casey Kurz scored with 13 seconds left for a 1-1 tie. A 4-0 win at Maine West on Thursday kept the girls alive in the Central Suburban League North race. GBN fell to Glenbrook South 1-0 at Techny Fields on Friday. The Spartans (16-3-2, 3-0-1) now visit Deerfield on Monday and a win will allow them to split the league title with Niles North.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL - The Spartans swept a pair of CSL North opponents to stay in the race for first ahead of a pair of big conference clashes. GBN beat Deerfield 25-22, 25-17 on Tuesday and then dominated Maine West 25-9, 25-17 on Thursday. Over the weekend, they took fourth in their own invite. After sweeping Oak Park-River Forest in the quarterfinals, the Spartans lost to Barrington and Stevenson. , Connor Bolan, Danny Slutsky, Glen Song and Scott Schwartz, a group of talented juniors has the squad primed to make a run towards state. This week the Spartans, 5-1 in the CSL North, will play Highland Park, also 5-1, and Niles North, 4-2. Also on the schedule is a non-conference match against the always tough Brother Rice.

SOFTBALL - GBN swept Highland Park in a home and home, but lost to Niles North 4-2 on Tuesday to fall behind Maine West at the top of the CSL North standings. The Spartans scored seven runs in the last three innings at Stevenson to beat the Patriots 9-5 on Friday. GBN (11-7-1) hosts Deerfield and Maine West during the week to try to pull even in the conference race.

BASEBALL - GBN's undefeated start against Illinois competition came to an end with a 5-2 loss at Glenbrook South on Monday. The Spartans bounced back with a pair of 10-0 wins over Maine East. On Saturday they played through a short rain delay to beat Niles West 7-1. Jason Scholl hit two home runs on the week and Alex Hermeling pitched in front of pro scouts against Niles West. Up next for the Spartans (21-2, 10-1) is a home and home with Maine West and a Saturday game with Waukegan.

BOYS GYMNASTICS - Nate Elfant earned automatic berths to state on two events at the Mundelein Sectional. The sophomore scored a 9.3 on floor to finish in a three-way tie for first and scored an 8.6 on rings to qualify in both events. At-large qualifiers will be announced on the IHSA website Monday and the state tournament is this weekend at Lincoln-Way East.

GIRLS TRACK - The CSL North meet was this weekend at Maine West and GBN took sixth. Val Bobart won the 3,200-meter race for the team's only win. Bobart, a state qualifier last year, and the Spartans now look ahead to the Loyola Sectional.

BOYS WATER POLO - The Spartans hosted the CSL tournament during the weekend and took fifth. They lost to Deer Park 17-9 in the quarterfinals before beating Maine East 10-9 and Maine South 7-4. GBN (9-19) hosts the sectional this week as the No. 7 seed and will face Glenbrook South in the first round.

GIRLS WATER POLO - The girls' version of the CSL tourney took place at Glenbrook South, where the Spartans took second. They defeated Maine West 18-6 and GBS 7-5 before falling to New Trier 11-6 in the final. No. 5 seed GBN (12-11) hosts No. 4 Prospect in the sectional quarterfinal on Wednesday.

BADMINTON - The season came to an end for the girls after a fifth place finish at the Buffalo Grove Sectional. The Spartans earned four points, placing behind the host Bison, Glenbrook South, Evanston and Maine West.
