Thanksgiving 2017: What's Open, Closed In Northbrook

Find out mall and grocery store hours, trash pickup schedule and what businesses will be closed for Thursday's holiday.

NORTHBROOK, IL — This Thanksgiving and Black Friday promise to be some of the busiest travel days this year. Whether you're in town for a visit or a longtime resident, it's helpful to know which places are extending hours like never before, and which are taking a step back to enjoy "turkey day" apart from the retail frenzy. Here's a list of public services, institutions, retailers and restaurant hours for Thanksgiving 2017.

Post Office: Post offices are closed on Thanksgiving but will resume operations on Friday.

Northbrook Village Hall: Village Hall will be closed Thursday, Nov. 23, and Friday, Nov. 24.

Public Libraries: Closed on Thanksgiving. Closing at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 22.

Garbage Collection: Service will be delayed by one day for all residents with normal collections following Thanksgiving, so pick-up for Thursday’s customers will be Friday and Friday customers will be visited on Saturday.

Banks: Most major banks are closed on Thanksgiving Day, and most will open on Friday. Call your branch to verify.

Schools: Northbrook elementary schools and Glenbrook high schools will be closed Nov. 22 -24.

Northbrook Thanksgiving Shopping

Retailers: A couple of blogs dedicated to Black Friday deals say 72 retailers will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. Outlets that say they've tentatively taken the holiday off include: Abt Electronics, Ace Hardware, Barnes & Noble, Costco, Home Depot, Neiman Marcus, Marshalls, Nordstrom and T.J. Maxx. National retailers that are expected to open on Thanksgiving include Best Buy, Kohl's, Macy's, Sears, Walgreens and Walmart. Target says it will close at midnight on Thanksgiving, then reopen at 6 a.m. Black Friday morning.

Northbrook Court's holiday hours run from 6 p.m. to midnight on Thanksgiving and from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Black Friday.

Lincolnwood Town Center will be open from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. and again from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving and Black Friday. Westfield Old Orchard Shopping Center's Thanksgiving hours also run 6 p.m. to midnight. On Black Friday it is scheduled to open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

  • H Mart, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Jewel-Osco, Pfingsten & Willow, 6 a.m. - 4 p.m. (Pharmacy Closed)
  • Jewel-Osco, Waukegan & Lake Cook, 6 a.m. - 12 a.m. (Pharmacy Closed)
  • Mariano's, 6 a.m. - 3 p.m. (Pharmacy Closed)
  • Trader Joe's: Closed.
  • Sunset Foods, 7 a.m. - 4 p.m.
  • Whole Foods Markets, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Pre-Thanksgiving Events in Northbrook

LEGO Party: From 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 22 at the Leisure Center, kids ages 5-12 can create ships, UFOs, planes, cars and anything you can imagine with more than 100 pounds of LEGO bricks and elements. Students will build themselves into an amazing six-foot tower of bricks. The party guide is Beth Weis, also known as the LEGO Lady.

Interfaith Thanksgiving Service: Thanksgiving is a time of joy and good cheer. Celebrate and give thanks on Wednesday, Nov. 22, at 7 p.m., at the Northbrook Clergy Association’s Annual Interfaith Community Thanksgiving Service. This year, the service will be held at the Village Presbyterian Church, 1300 Shermer Rd. Please bring some canned goods and other non-perishable food items or grocery store gift cards for a collection to benefit and help stock the Northfield Food Pantry.

Holiday Lighting: Lights in Northbrook's Central Business District will be turned on at close of business Wednesday, Nov. 22.
