'Transformative' Northbrook Band Director Receives State Award
Wayne Gordon has served as the band director at Wood Oaks Junior High since 2001.

NORTHBROOK, IL — Since 2001, Wayne Gordon has served as the band director at Wood Oaks Junior High School. His accolades in that position are endless, with the latest coming from the Illinois State Board of Education — 2025 Award of Excellence.
According to Northbrook School District 27, the award is the most prestigious of the "Those Who Excel" honors, which are presented by ISBE annually. To receive this award, educators must have "demonstrated a commitment to equity and to the success of all students." This includes regular collaborations with colleagues, students, and families to create positive school cultures.
In addition, they are lifelong learners who connect their schools to the community at large and who inspire other education professionals within and beyond their schools.

"It is with immense pride that we celebrate Mr. Gordon's receipt of the Award of Excellence for his exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication to District 27," Superintendent Dr. John Deiter said in a statement shared with Patch.
According to the district, under Gordon's leadership, the band at Wookd Oaks has been invited to perform at the SuperState Concert Band Festival 14 times, including being named the festival's Honor Band in 2016 and 2022. The band has received superior ratings from the Illinois Grade School Music Association's District Division for more than 20 years and the State Division for more than 10 years. The band received IGSMA State High Honors in 2023, and has been twice selected to perform at the Illinois Music Education Conference.

"His impact on the Wood Oaks Band Program has been transformative, guiding students to excel not only in music but also in personal growth," Deiter said. "Through his mentorship and steadfast support, Mr. Gordon has created a lasting legacy that enriches both our schools and community. This well-deserved recognition is a testament to his profound influence on music education and the lives of countless students."
