NORTHBROOK, IL — The 100th anniversary of the "War to End All Wars" is Sunday. It has been a national holiday since Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Originally known as Armistice Day Congress passed a resolution for an annual observance in 1926. President Eisenhower in 1954 renamed it Veterans Day after World War II. This year it falls on Sunday, Nov. 11.
The Northbrook American Legion Post No. 791 is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the armistice with a Veterans Day ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Northbrook Junior High, 1475 Maple Ave. All members of the Northbrook community are invited to attend, especially veterans and active service members, according to the district.
The Northbrook Junior High Wind Ensemble will perform patriotic music, including a tribute to each branch of the armed forced. Veterans and service members will be invited to stand and be recognized for the service, in a longstanding tradition among performing bands.
