
NORTHBROOK, IL - Pastor Michael Nevling of Village Presbyterian Church in Northbrook passed away on Dec. 4 of colon cancer. He was 56.
The Northbrook Star spoke to members of the congregation, who were heartbroken when they heard of their pastor’s passing.

“He always had a gentle spirit, and he treated everybody who approached him as if they were the most important person in the world,” said Alfred Lazar. “He would stop what he was doing to hear what you had to say.”
Nevling was more than tolerant when Jim Keating, an Irish-Catholic, was wed to his wife Pat at the church.

“Whenever I come in, I want to genuflect,’” Jim told the Star following a recent Sunday service. “He told me, ‘If you want to do it, I’ll get down and do it, too.’”
The pastor came to Northbrook from North Carolina in 2011 and retired earlier this year after his cancer had progressed.
