NORTHBROOK, IL — The coronavirus pandemic has had a far-reaching effect on seemingly everything, including fundraising for important organizations. The St. Baldrick's Foundation, a not-for-profit that raises funds to help find cures for children with cancer, is no exception. A group of 11 fifth-grader boys from Northbrook's Shabonee School recently decided they wanted to help.

Hearing that fundraising is down around 33 percent in 2020 for St. Baldrick's, the students began fundraising months ago. At the conclusion of the effort, the students were to shave their heads, but that event with the Wheeling Fire Department had to be canceled due to COVID-19. Not to be discouraged, the boys still ended up shaving their heads in a virtual event that was uploaded to YouTube.

In the end, the students raised nearly $22,000 for St. Baldrick's.
