Wire Fraud, Suspended Registration, ID Theft: Blotter

Family avoids paying $750 to person claiming to be grandson.

The following information is from the Northbrook Police Department. An arrest is not an indication of guilt.

ATTEMPTED WIRE FRAUD

A complainant related at 6:47 p.m. on January 29 that he received a phone call from a subject claiming to be their grandson who resides out of state. The caller related he crashed his car into a garage and injured his nose in the accident, he said that is why he sounded different. He said the garage owner agreed not to press charges if the grandson gave him money. A different person, who identified himself as a Boston police officer, spoke to the complainant and told him where to send the money. The complainant went to a pharmacy and purchased a Moneygram in the amount of $750 and sent it to a San Diego address. They complainant later spoke to his grandson who related he had not contacted them. The Northbrook officer taking the report was able to contact Moneygram prior to the transaction being sent to San Diego and the complainant was able to get the $750 returned.

SUSPENDED REGISTRATION

Juan M. Train, 51, Chicago was stopped at Dundee Rd. and Hazelwood at 4:48 a.m. on January 31 and charged with suspended registration for mandatory insurance violation. The officer stopped the defendant’s vehicle for a traffic violation. The license plates were found to be suspended by the Secy of State for a mandatory insurance violation. The defendant was transported to the PD where he was issued tickets and released on bond.

IDENTITY THEFT

A victim reported discovering that someone had used her credit card information to make an online purchase of a Mac Book Pro for $2,655.19. In investigating the order Apple confirmed it was shipped to victim’s address. The victim reported that she did not order the Mac Book and never received the delivery. Officers are investigating.
