Young Bands Needed for Rock the Green

Deadline to enter summer showcase is May 8.

Submitted by Northbrook Park District.

Northbrook will rock this summer, when young musicians perform and compete at Rock the Green: Battle of the North Shore Youth Bands on Friday, June 5 from 6-9 p.m. at Village Green Park.

The deadline for bands to enter the showcase and competition is Friday, May 8. This is the sixth year for the free family event, sponsored by the Northbrook Park District, Northbrook Arts Commission and Northbrook Youth Commission.

“We’d like to see a variety of bands from traditional rock to metal, ska, jazz and cover bands,” said Drew Kambach, Performing Arts Supervisor with the Park District. “The event allows teens to display their musical talent before hundreds of people in a unique setting and also provides entertainment for the community. We hope to have more bands in the semifinals this year, to give them the opportunity to perform on stage. And, the cash prizes are larger!”

The Grand Prize is $400 and the chance to perform before a Park Fest concert on June 16. The second-place prize is $200, and third place is $100. The audience favorite also will take home $100. And, bands can earn cash prizes in a new category: each night of semifinal competition will have a $75 winner.

To enter the competition, bands must submit a completed application and a CD, DVD or web link with two recorded songs. Semifinalists will be invited to perform on May 22 or May 29 between 5 and 8 p.m. at the Leisure Center. Each band will have a scheduled time to perform, and all members of selected bands must attend this round to qualify for the finals.

Bands must consist of at least three members, and the musicians cannot be older than 19 years. The semifinal rounds are open to the public, and each band can perform two songs and play for a maximum of eight minutes.

The band application is available at the Leisure Center and online at nbparks.org (under Events/Forms and Downloads). The application fee is $15 for Northbrook Park District residents and $25 for non-residents. The completed application, demo and application fee are due by May 8 at 5 p.m. and should be sent to:
