Young Northbrook artist's work is a hit all over town

Northbrook Farmers Market contest left two winners -- the triumphant young artist and the market itself

Tisha Sherwin may be one of Northbrook’s most well-known artists, though she’s only in the fifth grade.

The Wescott School student’s Northbrook Farmers Market poster was judged the best entry in a contest last year to promote the 10th annual season in 2018. Market manager Dale Duda made a lot of copies.

“Her poster is wonderful. Beautiful,” Duda said. “And it’s everywhere.”

It didn’t win a national contest, but it’s a hit in dozens of businesses and institutions all over town.

The best part is that some of Tisha’s friends run into it, see her name on it, and tell her about it.

“They keep saying they saw my poster and it was real good,” Tisha said.

It’s still on display this week, the first week in August, as Americans who like farm-fresh food celebrate National Farmers Market Week.

Tisha's picture of a dog made of fruits and vegetables points the way to her local market at Meadow and Shermer roads, where two dozen farmers and food vendors sell their wares 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays through Oct. 17. That’s where Tisha and her family like to pick up some of her favorite things to eat -- bread, vegetables and fruit, she said.

She amazes her friends and family with the creativity that she shows every day. “She’s very special. She’s very good in art,” said grandma, Alita Matienzo.

“She has so many drawings that are so good, you wouldn’t believe that she can do it.”

Tisha says for now, she’s aiming at a lifetime in art.

“Or maybe play soccer,” she said.
