'Are You OK?': Relative Worried About Woman's Well-Being Before Fatal Shooting By Cops

Michele Robey was shot and killed by Chicago police Friday after allegedly threatening and lunging at officers with a knife.

CHICAGO, IL — A family member of the 55-year-old woman who was fatally shot by Chicago police Friday night after allegedly threatening and lunging at officers with a knife was worried about the victim's health and well-being in the weeks leading up to the tragic incident, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

"Who are you today? Are you ok?" the relative recently wrote on the Facebook page of Michele Robey, the woman who police shot and killed Friday, Feb. 10, after receiving a call that she had been harassing workers with a knife at a CVS Pharmacy in the 3900 block of North Western Avenue in the North Center neighborhood. A Taser was used twice on Robey, and when that was ineffective, officers opened fire.

Robey, who lived in the Hollywood Park neighborhood, died from a gunshot wound to the stomach, the Sun-Times reports. Her death has been ruled a homicide by the Cook County medical examiner's officer, the report added.

The Independent Police Review Authority is currently investigating the shooting. As part of department policy, the officers involved in the shooting will be placed on 30-day administrative leave.

Over the past several years, Robey struggled with financial problems and faced minor run ins with law enforcement.

Disabled and unemployed beginning in 2011, she filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2012 and owed more than $300,000, stemming largely from unpaid medical bills and mortgages on two Elgin properties, according to the Sun-Times. In the filing, Robey claimed to have less than $20 in cash, and she said that nearly $800 of the $2,395 in monthly Social Security payments she received went toward taking care of her then-15-year-old son, the report added.

Last year, Robey was arrested on retail theft and drug possession charges, the report stated. Those charges, however, were eventually dropped, the report added.
