Research Finds Acupuncture Safe for the Whole Family

Acupuncture is safe for men, women and children.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been helping people feel better for thousand of years. Because it is an holistic system that is not pharmaceutically based it is a safe and effective health care option for children.

Pediatric modalities include tui na (Chinese medical massage), moxibustion, diet therapy, Chinese herbal therapy, acupressure and acupuncture. The benefits of using TCM to help keep you and your family healthy are many. In addition to physical well being, another advantage of TCM is that fosters growth in other areas of your life. As a child's energy and vitality grows so do their happiness, confidence and resilience.

Of all the types of alternative medicine practice in the United States, acupuncture is the one of the most common. Acupuncture can effectively treat a wide spectrum of pains, disease and illnesses. A 2011 study in the journal Pediatrics also stated acupuncture is safe for children.

Results from a Harvard study of 50 teens showed improvements in relief from migraines and endometriosis. Additionally, a study from 2007 shows that according to the National Health Statistics Report, some 150,000 children in the U.S. used acupuncture to treat headaches and migraines, abdominal pain, musculoskeletal problems, and even anxiety. Some of the common pediatric conditions for which TCM is considered effective are: ADD/ADHD; colds; bed wetting; ear infections; stomach aches and other digestive issues; slow growth or failure to thrive; night crying; asthma and runny nose.

Some children with cancer have been treated with acupressure in order to relive pain. Acupressure is acupuncture's sister treatment, where pressure, instead of a needle, is used to stimulate an acu point. Furthermore, when compared to standard forms of treatment, most families found acupuncture to be pleasant, not painful. Studies also show anxiety of needles and the general attitude towards acupuncture as a form of treatment became more positive over time.

Parents looking to treat their families with acupuncture should look for licensed acupuncturists in a clean and safe environment who also have experience working with all ages. The acupuncturist should have the skills and finesse to talk you and your family members through the treatment and explain any sensations you may experience.

Nancy Park, a New York acupuncturist, has a two-year-old son who receives acupuncture. Nancy states, "Acupuncture is an approach that really brings a sense of ownership and responsibility for your own health." This lesson of taking responsibility of your well being by using alternative medicines such as acupuncture is great to teach children from an early age.
