Chicago Neurologist to Open Lakeshore Hyperbaric Center In Roscoe Village

CHICAGO'S ONLY STAND ALONE HYPERBARIC THERAPY CENTER THAT OFFERS PURE OXYGEN

Chicago now has its first fully certified stand-alone hyperbaric therapy center. Lakeshore Hyperbaric Center, located in Roscoe Village, offers the latest in hyperbaric technology and treatment and will open its doors on September 30, 2015 at 2219 W. Belmont Avenue.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a non-invasive treatment that uses pure oxygen to accelerate healing in the treatment of wound injuries and illnesses. Concussions, autistic disorders, sports related injuries, headaches and other neurological conditions such as fibromyalgia and post stroke recovery are just a few of the afflictions that may benefit from this therapy. Hyperbaric treatments may help speed the healing process, reducing recovery times as well as downtime. The treatment may work in conjunction with many other treatments and therapies.

“Hyperbaric therapy has been used for centuries around the world but its use and effectiveness have skyrocketed in recent years due to advancements in technology,” said Lakeshore’s founder, Dr. Lenny Cohen, M.D., a board-certified neurologist.

Dr. Cohen’s interest in hyperbaric therapy started on a personal level as he was researching alternative therapies after watching his father suffer from Alzheimer’s disease.

“Looking into the science, I realized hyperbaric oxygen therapy could affect real changes in my patients who suffer from a variety of neurological conditions,” Dr. Cohen said. “By administering high oxygen concentrations in a controlled medical setting, we can help stimulate the healing process, decrease inflammation and enhance the formation of new blood vessels for more rapid healing.”

The hyperbaric therapy, which uses a comfortable pressurized chamber to increase oxygen intake, has applications in a wide range of medical conditions and currently there are multiple medical studies exploring HBOT use. Celebrities and pro athletes have been known to use hyperbaric oxygen therapy recreationally.

“As people age, they lose appropriate blood flow and oxygen supply, which leads to a variety of chronic conditions. With HBOT we are able to repair blood flow and increase functionality,” he said. The therapy also is used in sports, successfully treating professional athletes including NFL players who suffer from repeated head trauma or other sports injuries, he added. The beauty of oxygen is that is helps so many different conditions on healing naturally.

“As a neurologist, I’m excited to open a center that helps patients who are good candidates for HBOT treatment, in concert with traditional medicine or as an alternative,” Dr. Cohen said. Some insurance companies may cover the therapy. Otherwise a competitive pricing is offered. However, medical consultation is needed for an effective treatment plan. Both Dr. Cohen and a certified nurse will be on-hand for each treatment that on average lasts 60 - 120 minutes.
