Condemned Storefront to Finally be Demolished, Replaced

The gated, empty building next to the North Center Chamber of Commerce headquarters is finally being taken down and will be replaced with commercial and residential units.

The one-story brick building next to the North Center Chamber of Commerce is being torn down after long-term vacancy and will be refurbished into a four-story mixed-use development.

The first floor of 4056 N. Lincoln Ave. will be a 1400-square-foot commercial unit, with three residential spaces located above it, owner Sebastian Barsh said.

Canopy scaffolding had taken over the sidewalk in front of the building as of Monday. The street parking area there will be partially closed while work is under way, according to the posted permit.

Workers will be present between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Barsh says that once city officials give the "OK" for demolition, it will take about six months to finish construction.

"If all goes well, the building should be done by the end of December or early January," he says.

The current commercial unit became vacant after serving as a storage facility for a dry cleaners, Harsh noted.

As for the business that will fill the commercial unit, he had not started advertising or searching as of Tuesday.
