Spring is the perfect time to get rid of old electronics, cardboard boxes and aluminum cans – and the Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club (NBGC) can help. The NBGC Spring Cleaning, Recycling and Public Service (SCRAPS) event is a new program designed to clean up the community and the environment in a coordinated and safe manner.

The NBGC works with local businesses and residents to clean out old recyclable waste materials and drop it off at the local Streets & Sanitation yard. Their efforts will create environmental awareness in the neighborhood and encourage the community to actively participate in safe disposal of recyclable waste.

WHAT:    The Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club (NBGC) invites local businesses and residents to clean out old junk and safely RECYCLE when they host their new SCRAPS environmental program on Saturday April 20th, in conjunction with Chicago’s Citywide Clean and Green volunteer cleanup project.

NBGC leaders, members and club staff will be onsite for their Spring Cleaning/Recycling And Public Service event to collect old electronics, waste metals and paper products for recycling purposes. Your scraps of recyclable waste materials can be delivered to the 47th Ward Streets and Sanitation Yard between 10am and 2pm for the club to collect and separate appropriately.

WHO:       NBGC Youth Leaders, members and staff are participating, in conjunction with the Mayor’s Office, 47th Ward Alderman Amaya Pewar’s office, and Chicago’s Citywide Clean and Green volunteer clean-up event.

WHEN:    NBGC’s SCRAPS day is on Saturday, April 20, 2013 from 10am to 2pm.

WHERE:  The drop-off site is located at the 47th Ward Streets and Sanitation Yard, 5333 N. Western Ave. in Chicago.

ABOUT:   Borne of a football game on October 19, 1931, the Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club (NBGC) is an independent nonprofit organization and an integral part of Chicago’s north side community, providing services to over 1600 children each year. While founded on sports programs, the NBGC stands “For Better Men and Women” and has offered Club members the opportunity to expand their horizons, build character and enhance the community for eight decades on Chicago’s north side.

The Club is not affiliated with other Boys and Girls clubs and is responsible for their own funding through corporate and foundation appeals, supported by alumni, parent and business contributions and annual fundraisers. Modest program and league fees are assessed to defray costs.

The NBGC offers a series of diversified athletic, social, recreational, cultural, tutoring and youth leadership programs for boys and girls 5-18 years old. This positive adult and teen supervised program provides a rewarding alternative to the many negative influences that urban youth face.

NBGC rules are simple: everyone plays and develops at his or her own pace; respects each other, advocating the value of friendship and pride in oneself; and, encourages community involvement by working closely with community groups, area schools and senior centers. Many thousands of alumni still reside within the NBGC community.
