Future Kerry Wood Field Site Remains Empty

Officials are waiting for the go ahead to resume construction on the baseball stadium, but in the meantime, the site by Clark Park remains empty. Read on for an update on the baseball field.

Although construction on the Kerry Wood Cubs Field was was put on hold in January when contaminated soil was discovered, the project should start moving again by the end of July.

The site, considered a "brownfield," or an unused industrial site with possible contamination, was discovered to have two underground petroleum tanks when initial excavation began, according to DNA info Chicago.

The tanks were disposed of, following Illinois Environmental Protection Agency guidelines, according to the Clark Park Advisory Council.

Once the soil analysis is filed in a comprehensive site investigation report by the end of July, cleanup should commence, the project's officials have said.

The $5 million baseball stadium at 3457 N. Rockwell St., right behind Lane Tech High School, will be used to host baseball games for Chicago public high schools and statewide tournaments.
