Skimming Device Found On ATM In North Center

Police are investigating after the device was discovered in a PNC Bank Branch machine.

CHICAGO, IL — A PNC Bank branch employee discovered a skimmer on one of its ATMs and reported it to police Thursday night. The branch is located at 4201 N Lincoln Ave. Police are investigating.

The Better Business Bureau said skimmers' technology continues to advance, and the devices have become smaller to detect. The devices steal data encoded on the magnetic strips of bank cards, and pinhole cameras capture PIN numbers as they are entered.

The bureau recommends inspecting the ATM to look for anything out of the ordinary, including unusual signage or suspiciously-placed cameras. BBB also recommends covering the keypad with your hand, and changing your PIN periodically.
