McDonald's Resurrects Szechuan Sauce For 'Rick And Morty'

Nearly two decades after it was introduced, McDonald's Szechuan nugget sauce has temporarily returned because of "Rick and Morty."

OAK BROOK, IL — A "Rick and Morty" character's frenzied obsession quest to find McDonald's erstwhile Szechuan nugget sauce is finally over. After years of demands from fans of the show, McDonald's has shipped a whole jug of the beloved sauce to "Rick and Morty" co-creator Justin Roiland.

The gift was so epic that Roiland's celebratory Twitter pic was accompanied by a two-word expletive that conveyed his astonishment. Of course the shows followers went nuts on social media, reveling in the show's apparent victory and requesting a full return of Szechuan sauce.

McDonald's threw a bone —or more aptly, a jug— at three lucky fans via a Twitter contest. The lucky winners each received their own half gallon of teriyaki Szechuan sauce, which McDonald's claims was "75% of the Szechuan sauce in the universe."

McDonald's hasn't served the Szechuan sauce since 1998, when it was launched alongside a promotion for the movie Mulan. Since then, the coveted condiment has been so elusive that someone once paid $14,ooo for a packet of Szechuan sauce on eBay. Disney is set to release a live action version of Mulan in 2018. It's entirely possible that McDonald's will tap into a hidden store of Szechuan sauce for the release. Until then, customers may just have to enjoy it —as Rick did on the show— in their memories.
