Oak Brook Will Install Warning Signs For Red Light Cameras
Oak Brook will install warning signs to alert drivers of red light cameras at the intersection of 22nd Street and Route 83.
OAK BROOK, IL — After more than a year-long saga and a dropped lawsuit against Oak Brook Terrace, Oak Brook officials have announced that they plan to install signage to warn drivers of the red light cameras at the intersection of 22nd Street and Route 83, according to Chicago Tribune. The red light cameras, which were installed by neighboring Oak Brook Terrace, had remained inactive until just last month.
The controversy over the red light cameras began last January, when Oak Brook filed a lawsuit against Oak Brook Terrace shortly after the cameras were installed. Oak Brook officials argued that the intersection falls under their village jurisdiction, so it would have been unfair for Oak Brook Terrace to collect fees for drivers' red light violations at that intersection. Officials were also concerned that businesses at the nearby Oak Brook Center would be adversely affected by the red light cameras.
The red light cameras were not in use for six months while the legal action was pending. The lawsuit was initially filed because Oak Brook questioned why IDOT approved Oak Brook Terrace's request for cameras just two months after denying them. In an unexpected move, Oak Brook officials dropped the lawsuit June 15 and the cameras were inspected and approved for activation on June 28, according to the Chicago Tribune.
