Oakbrook Center Sears Closing Temporarily For Massive Downsizing

The Oakbrook Center Sears store will close for a short time starting in September for remodeling. The new store will be much smaller.

OAK BROOK, IL — The Sears location at Oakbrook Center is set to close temporarily, but when it reopens customers will find a vastly different store. Sears plans to close the store for remodeling as early as September to make the retail space significantly smaller, according to Chicago Tribune.

The Oakbrook Center Sears currently takes up three floors of a 250,000 square foot space. Once it reopens in summer of 2018, the store will only occupy one floor. The company is also cutting back the merchandise the store will carry. Customers will only find about a third of the selection available.

This drastic change is part of the struggling company's plan to downsize retail stores across the country after a inadequate quarterly earnings. Sears announced earlier this month that it will eliminate hundreds of full-time positions in the hopes of scaling back costs. Chicago Tribune reported that the Oakbrook Center Sears Auto Center will close in March 2018.
