5 Tips to Manage COVID-19 Anxiety
Bremen High School District 228 Social Workers share their tips for managing COVID-19 anxiety

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), everyone reacts differently to stressful situations. The novel coronavairus (COVID-19) can lead to anxiety and fear for many. The disease can be overwhelming and cause strong emotions for both children and adults.
Yet, despite being socially isolated, communication and support is still available.
At Bremen High School District 228, social workers pulled their resources and five best tips that they believe will help those suffering from COVID-19 anxiety.

1) Keep your mind busy: use positive distractions such as journaling, listening to music, playing board games, puzzles, and coloring.
2) Practice mindfulness: use apps and/or websites such as Mind Yeti, Beyond My Battle, and Calm for mindfulness tips such as meditation and breathing.

3) Limit social media exposure: if COVID-19 is the source of your anxiety, then social media is definitely something to take a break from as many people and media outlets are regularly posting about it. Give yourself a break from looking at COVID-19 information. Try to focus on something else such as the examples provided in tip #1.
4) Get in a daily routine and focus on controlling what you can: "I cannot control everything happening right now, but I can control me. I am being active and working out, I am using positive thoughts, I am finding time to be creative."
5) Practice self talk and affirmations: "I recognize I am feeling anxious about this. I am letting go of the negativity and fear and embracing my chats with good friends, my ability to get good sleep, and the ability to make the best of the time being. This will pass."
If these tips aren't helping, remember that support and communication is not limited. Continue to talk with your family and friends in a virtual format about how you are feeling. Additionally, consider seeking help from support lines such as the Crisis Text Line.
