This 14-year-old pit bull mix was found running loose in Oak Forest last weekend. Volunteers want him back into a home as soon as possible.

OAK FOREST, IL — The volunteers behind an Oak Forest animal control group are working hard to get a stray senior dog found over the weekend into a new home. Volunteers traced the microchip on the 14-year-old pit bull mix back to a family in Markham, who do not want him anymore after his elderly owner died.

The dog was found near 154th and Kilpatrick. Friends of Oak Forest Animal Control shared the dog's photo and information on the group's Facebook page, saying, "it takes a village and we need our village to step up for this guy.

"... He will not be picked up and reunited with family, as they do not wish to take him back. Sad."

"Rescues are full, shelters are full, and with his age, we will probably not be able to find him rescue. We have already reached out to a few that specialize in senior pets, and we have been turned down. We don’t have many options for this guy. If you have EVER thought that you would like to help, now is the time. We need someone to step up and agree to foster or adopt him. Most likely it will be a hospice situation."

He is neutered, and has not yet been tested with children, or cats. He has been dog-tested and would do best with a dog of the same energy level (senior or calm, "chill, couch potato pup"). High energy may be overwhelming to him. He will be completely updated on vaccinations before turned over to a new home, hospice, or foster situation.

One commenter recognized the dog from previous interactions with its family and said his name is Dooby.

"He is very sweet and friendly in our facility," staff wrote on the page, "and is anxious as he wants to go home."

Anyone interested in learning about this dog — presumably named Dooby — should reach out to the group via their Facebook page.
