Midlothian, IL — Bremen High School District 228 is proud to announce the appointment of Mr. Matthew Meany as the new principal of Bremen High School, effective July 1, bringing more than two decades of experience, leadership, and deep community ties to the role. Mr. Meany will succeed Dr. Jessica Rucinski, who will transition into a new role as Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning for the district.
A familiar and respected leader within the district, Mr. Meany has dedicated the past 21 years to Bremen High School and District 228. His career began in the classroom, where he spent seven years as a Physical Education and Driver Education teacher and coach. He later served as District Supervisor for Physical Education, Health, and Driver Education for four years before transitioning into administration. Mr. Meany served one year as Assistant Principal and has spent the past ten years as Associate Principal.
“My journey in education truly began with the mentors I had growing up—the coaches and teachers who saw my potential before I did,” said Meany. “They inspired me to pursue this profession so I could create an environment where every student feels supported and believed in.”
A lifelong member of the community, Meany grew up just miles from Bremen High School and was drawn to the district by its strong sense of pride and tradition. “It felt like the perfect fit to join a district that truly cares about its families,” he said. “That same community spirit continues to inspire me every day.”
As principal, Meany is focused on growing a culture of high expectations and belonging. His top priorities include strengthening student engagement, addressing chronic absenteeism through proactive support systems, and ensuring every student has access to the opportunities needed for success beyond high school.
“I am most excited about helping each student become the best version of themselves during their time at Bremen,” Meany said. “Student success is about more than just academics—it’s about growth, confidence, and preparing students to thrive in whatever path they choose.”
Meany describes his leadership style as rooted in servant leadership, emphasizing support, collaboration, and leading by example. He is committed to building strong relationships with students, staff, and families by remaining visible, approachable, and engaged in school life.
“Whether it’s greeting students each morning, attending events, or connecting with families, I want everyone to know their voice matters,” he said. “Strong relationships are the foundation of a successful school community.”
In addition to Mr. Meany’s appointment, Bremen High School announces several leadership transitions for the upcoming school year. Mr. Rey Lang will serve as Dean of Students, transitioning from his role as a special education teacher. Mr. Daniel Maurer has been named Math Department Supervisor after previously serving as a math teacher. Ms. Sarah Hofer will step into the role of Assistant Principal for Student Services, following her work as math supervisor. Mr. Joseph Infantino will assume the position of Associate Principal after serving as Dean of Students. These changes reflect the district’s continued commitment to developing strong internal leadership and supporting student success at every level.
Meany also emphasized the importance of school culture in his vision for Bremen. “School culture and community are the heartbeat of our school. When students feel safe, valued, and connected, they are more motivated to succeed.”
Outside of school, Meany enjoys spending time with his family and friends, traveling, and relaxing at home with his wife and dog.
In a message to the Bremen community, Meany shared: “Having been a part of this community for many years, I am truly honored to step into this role. My focus is ensuring every student, staff member, and family has the best possible experience at Bremen. I’m excited for this next chapter and grateful for the trust placed in me to lead such an incredible school.”
