Bremen Junior Maya Contreras Named Distinguished Young Woman of Midlothian, Advances to State Competition

Midlothian, IL — Bremen High School junior Maya Contreras has been selected as a state finalist in the Distinguished Young Women of Illinois program and earned the title of Distinguished Young Woman of Midlothian, Illinois for 2027.

Maya recently competed in the program’s preliminary event, where she demonstrated excellence across all five categories: scholastics, interview, talent, fitness, and self-expression. Judges were particularly impressed by her poise, confidence, and thoughtful responses during the interview portion of the competition.

Over the next three months, Maya will continue preparing as she advances to the state-level competition, where she will compete for the title of Distinguished Young Woman of Illinois. This next phase will provide additional opportunities for her to showcase her leadership, academic achievements, and personal strengths alongside top candidates from across the state.

“I’m so honored to have been introduced to this program, and I’m shocked I’ve made it this far! I can’t wait to continue on and meet new people, and I hope that through this program I can help make an impact,” Maya said.

Maya has proudly represented Bremen through a CBS News Spotlight and Bremen Closet feature story, as well as District 228 at the ISBE Student Voice Summit. A founding member of Bremen’s Mariachi Band, she is also actively involved in Band, Theater, Cross Country, Jazz Ensemble, NHS, Pep Club, Poms, Speech, and Student Council. Through each activity, Maya leads with passion, humility, and kindness.

“Maya elevates every space she is a part of,” said Ryan Blackwell, Assistant Principal for Teaching and Learning. “Her impact on the positive culture at Bremen can be felt in every event and classroom she is present in, whether she is performing, leading, or representing our school in the community. We are incredibly proud of her and grateful for the example she sets every day.”

About Distinguished Young Women

Distinguished Young Women is a national scholarship program that promotes and rewards scholarship, leadership, and talent in high school juniors. Participants are evaluated in five key areas: scholastics, interview, talent, fitness, and self-expression. The program emphasizes personal development, confidence-building, and community involvement.

At the local, state, and national levels, Distinguished Young Women provides significant scholarship opportunities. Bremen High School District 228 is located in the southwest suburbs of Chicago and serves the communities of Midlothian, Posen, Tinley Park, Markham, Hazel Crest, Country Club Hills and Oak Forest.
