SOUTH HOLLAND, IL — South Holland police are asking for the public's help after a fatal hit-and-run over the weekend.

Just after midnight on Saturday, August 15, officers responded to the 100 block of E. 173rd St, near the Babe Ruth baseball field, after receiving a report of a deceased male lying in the roadway near the railroad tracks. Investigators believe the victim, Cornell Carpenter, age 59, was struck by a vehicle and dragged some distance.

The driver fled the scene.

Police said they believe the vehicle involved has visible damage, such as front-end damage or broken lights.

Anyone who knows of a vehicle in the area that suddenly has similar damage is asked to contact police.

"We're also asking the driver directly: please do the right thing and turn yourself in," police said.

Call 708-331-3131, ext. 2, or submit an anonymous tip.

"Any detail, no matter how small, could help bring this person to justice," authorities said.
