South Suburban College sophomore point guard James Harris was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association All-American 1st Team. Harris averaged 17.4 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds and 2.5 steals in leading the Bulldogs to a 28-5 record and a No. 3 ranking in the final NJCAA Division II poll.
During the season, Harris earned five Player-of-the-Week honors, which are the most of any player in the region, and he was named Region IV-A Co-Player-of-the-Year.
“I am very happy for James to get this honor,” said Head Coach John Pigatti. “He came into the season with a tough burden to carry as he was the point guard on a brand new team which did not have any return players.
Pigatti added, “James not only was a leader on the court but off the court as well – he is the perfect example of what a student-athlete should be. He will graduate from South Suburban College in the summer, and will continue his play at a NCAA Division 1 school. This is a very prestigious honor for him to receive, and he has earned it.”
Harris now represents the fourth 1st Team All-American that Pigatti has had in his first five seasons at SSC. This accomplishment has never been done before by any head coach on the NCAA, NAIA or NJCAA level.
Other 2010-11 Bulldogs player honors included freshman Sultan Muhammad, Region IV-A 1st Team, and freshman Mudi Eruteya, Region IV-A 2nd Team.
