Bilingual Nurse Visits Bremen HS AP Spanish Classes
Guest speaker discusses pre-requisites required to be part of the medical field
Bremen High School’s Advanced Placement (AP) Spanish classes had a guest speaker this month; bilingual Registered Nurse Ms. Maritza Ortega. Ortega came to discuss the pre-requisites required to be a part of the medical field. Currently, the AP Spanish students are in the Science and Technology unit in their course and came across an article about the medical profession peaking their interest. Their teacher, Ms. Mayra Ortega had a wonderful idea; she could not answer all of their questions but she knew someone that could! Ortega asked her sister to come answer questions for her students. Ortega spoke to the students about the rigor of the job, and what they need to do in order to get into a nursing program.
“The students are the ones that asked me to pursue finding a guest speaker from the nursing field, so they were eager to ask questions,” said Ms. Ortega.
Bremen Junior Abrial Suarez asked Ms. Ortega if she enjoys her job. Ortega responded, “You become a nurse knowing that you will see things that are tough to see; it’s not always pretty. But I must say, giving a person loving care and taking care of them is why you get into this career. If you are a caring person and like to take care of people and make people feel comfortable, then trust me you will never work a day in your life because as a nurse you will be doing what you love.”
