Bremen High School District 228 students go to college boot camp

Students, through the Dual Credit Program, could be provided with the opportunity to earn free college credit while in high school.

OAK FOREST, IL - 75 Bremen High School District 228 students participated in a Career Ready Boot Camp at the South Suburban Oak Forest College Center on Thursday, April 28.

Renee Mack, District Career Readiness Coordinator, said the purpose of the Career Ready Bootcamp was to expand access and career readiness opportunities to eligible students allowed under a unique grant provided by the South Cook Intermediate Service Center.

Career sessions were presented by district career counselors, Junior Achievement, South Suburban College, and the Calumet Area Industrial Commission.

Topics included Early College, Dual Credit Courses, Dress for Success, Summer Internships, Resume Writing, Developing a Career Portfolio, Interviewing Skills, Find Your Career Passion, and a South Suburban College Maker Lab showcase.

Dan Daitchman, a volunteer on behalf of Junior Achievement, hosted an interviewing seminar during the program. Daitchman gave students pointers on how to score a job, what to say to an interviewer, and how to know if a role is right for them.

“Body language, dressing nice, and being well-groomed are all very important during an interview,” Daitchman said. “An interview is the final impression you get to make when applying for a job, and you want to make a good last impression before the employers make a decision. These days more than ever, communication skills are so important. A lot of communication and interviews have gone digital, so being able to talk confidently to a potential employer can be nerve wracking.”

Along-side seminars, students were also informed of free credit opportunities through the Dual Credit Program, which provides students with the opportunity to earn college credit in approved high school courses. Earning an A, B or C in a dual credit class can lead to students receiving a free college credit.
