MIDLOTHIAN, IL - This week, 30 Bremen High School Criminal Law students participated in the Drones and Dogs event at South Suburban College in honor of National Criminal Justice Month.

The national month was established by the United States in 2009 to promote societal awareness around the causes and consequences of crime, and strategies for preventing and responding to it.

During this event, students learned about the increasing use of drones by law enforcement to perform critical functions such as search and rescue, execution of search warrants, and more. The Burr Ridge Police Department and Keenan Newton, a drone Pro with the FAA, led a drone demonstration.

Students interacted with Louie, a canine from the Worth Police Department. They learned about the use of canines in law enforcement in many different capacities such as to aid/support child and witness testimony, in the therapeutic setting of helping officers returning from traumatic events, and in more traditional uses such as drug detection.

"Collaborating with Ms. Becky Walters, J.D., Paralegal Studies and Criminal Justice Program Coordinator at South Suburban College, over the last couple of years has been a great experience,” said Dr. Chad Augustine, Social Studies teacher at Bremen. “Ms. Walters has been a big supporter of the Criminal Law Program at Bremen High School. We appreciate Ms. Walters and her colleagues being able to offer SSC District students such an authentic experience, ultimately giving them a better working knowledge of the criminal justice field."
