Bremen HS Hosts Obama Foundation Conversation

The main focus was to get young people talking and empowering them to make a change within their community

On Friday, April 20, 2018, Bremen High School hosted an Obama Foundation Conversation. Yelitza Mendoza, Bremen alum and current Roosevelt University sophomore, came to Bremen High School to lead a discussion about the documentary, American Creed. Yelitza is majoring in sociology with a minor in women's and gender studies. She is very active in the nonprofit world and is currently doing work with the Obama Foundation. Mendoza asked Bremen High School Spanish teacher Mrs. Gina Arguelles if she could gather a few students to have a discussion about the division that is currently happening in the United States. The main focus was to get young people talking and empowering them to make a change within their community. “The students involved in the discussion had many thoughtful and powerful comments,” said Mrs. Arguelles. One student said, "making people believe in themselves and showing them the opportunities they have is essential for a future where everyone goes as far as their capabilities allow them. The divide in America will only end when we start seeing each other as equal and unite,” while another said, “the American Dream is very alive, we all have a unique idea of what it is. We are the next generation of leaders and regardless of our race we are here to fight for a better future!” “I was so proud of the students coming together to have an educated mature discussion on a hot topic. Leaving this event reminded me again why I love being a Bremen Brave!” said Arguelles.
