Bremen HS Junior Organizes Donation Drive

Maria Shelter of Chicago was the recipient of donations

Bremen High School is full of generous young people thriving to make a difference; junior Katie Tieri is one of them! Tieri decided that she wanted to organize a donation drive for the Maria Shelter located in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago. The Maria Shelter is a women’s shelter where women in troubled circumstances can seek haven and learn to stand on their own feet.

“Katie was the mastermind behind this entire operation! She made the contacts, did the organizing, advertising, and motivated her classmates to participate. I acted as her sponsor along the way and only offered guidance when needed. This was very much a student-led project. I am so proud of her!” said sponsor and French teacher Mrs. Amanda Chelepis.

For several weeks the Bremen High School community collected items that the shelter was in need of. These items included but were not limited to bed sheets, cleaning supplies, hygiene products, and clothes.

Once the items were collected, sorted, and packaged a group of students, along with an alumni and Mrs. Chelepis, donated the items one Saturday morning.

“Katie and her classmates realized how truly blessed they are and wanted to give back to those in need. It was an honor to serve as her mentor in this project,” said Mrs. Chelepis.
