Bremen HS Prepares for Global Youth Service Day

GYSD is this Saturday, April 18, 2015

Bremen High School is hosting a Global Youth Service Day Project, this Saturday, April 18, 2015. This is a student led project, led by Midlothian’s very own Houston Weatherly. Weatherly is a senior at Bremen High School who thought it would be a great idea to help middle school children learn the importance of a healthy lifestyle. The participants will learn how to plant and grow herbs and vegetables, as well as learn Mrs. Michelle Obama’s dance that was featured on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. Many people within the Bremen community have stepped up to help Weatherly take on this challenge; Mrs. Gina Arguelles and the Interact Club are sponsoring Weatherly for any materials he may need, Mrs. Amanda Chelepis and Student Council have been assisting him in preparing for the day, and the BHS Poms Team will be teaming up with him to teach the dance. Lastly, Science teacher Mr. Craig Cappel has been working with Weatherly to educate him on the Bremen Garden and teach him how to plant and grow herbs and vegetables in the garden. Weatherly has decided to plant cilantro, tomatoes, and a variety of peppers in the garden.

Global Youth Service Day is the largest community service event in the world, and the only event dedicated to celebrating the contributions that young people make to their communities year-round. Several Chicago Southland area schools, churches, and organizations will join forces in a variety of student-led service projects all over the Chicagoland area on Saturday, April 18 from 9am-noon as part of an international campaign that celebrates the power of young people. Global Youth Service Day is led locally by The Bridge Teen Center in Orland Park. There is a $5 registration fee to participate (the fee covers the cost of your Global Youth Service Day t-shirt.) For more information or to sign up for the event, contact The Bridge Teen Center at 708-532-0500 or via email at info@thebridgeteencenter.org. Students can also register for an existing Global Youth Service Day project by visiting gysdchicago.org. Any high school student is welcome to get involved – there are no school or residency restrictions.
