Bremen HS Production Design Students Assist the American Nuclear Society

Students will produce mini Rutherford boards for the ANS

Bremen High School Production Design students had the opportunity to meet with the Out Reach Manager for the American Nuclear Society, Ms. Tracy Coyle. Ms. Coyle was able to give the students firsthand knowledge of the project they were about to start, making 125 mini Rutherford boards. The boards are designed for students to deduce shapes and sizes of unseen objects by tracking the movements of objects they can see, in relation to the unseen object. Teacher Mr. Jerry Ward describes this project, “This lesson is one of the best learning experiences these students will ever receive. It’s hands-on, interactive, and is real-world based.” The mini-Rutherford boards will be made for future scientists and will be presented to the American Nuclear Society when they are complete.

“The magnitude of this project will take several weeks, but the knowledge that the students will gain will stay with them forever,” said Mr. Ward.

The American Nuclear Society (ANS) is a not-for-profit, international, scientific and educational organization. It was established by a group of individuals who recognized the need to unify the professional activities within the various fields of nuclear science and technology. The core purpose of ANS is to promote the awareness and understanding with regard to the application of nuclear science and technology.

Freshmen Production and Design student Kenadi Ferguson spoke about the presentation and project, “At first I was confused about what the boards were going to be used for. However, after hearing Ms. Coyle explain the project and their ultimate use, I was able to grasp the concept. I think it’s really cool that we are able to help the American Nuclear Society with something right here at Bremen!”
